I am prepared to teach introductory and advanced courses in sociological theory, social movements, political sociology, social psychology, micro-level democratic processes, political communication, and qualitative methods. More specialized courses of my own design (that relate to my research) include the following:
Interaction Processes Inside Social Movements
Scripts, Power & Disruption: A Goffmanian Investigation of Protest
Leaderless or Leaderful? Social Movements' Ambivalence About Leadership
Outsider Movements, Insider Operatives, and Intraparty Insurgency
Class, Habitus & Political Participation
Crises of Legitimacy & Political Realignment
Populist Contests for the Common Sense
I am passionate about effective teaching pedagogy. In my work in social movements and grassroots organizing, I have had a tremendous opportunity to learn participatory and experiential teaching pedagogies, which I bring into the classroom. These experiences helped me to reconceptualize the teacher’s role as one that is as much about facilitation and culture-building as it is about imparting knowledge. I have developed my approach to teaching over years of practice, training thousands of grassroots organizers, campaigners, candidates, and leaders across the country (see teaching section of my CV).
